This past weekend a few of us jumped on the Harleys and took a ride a little bit south of here so that we could do something we had talked about for a long time. We had reservations on the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad dinner train, located in Boone, Iowa. For some, it was the first time on a train and what a fun thing to do for their first train ride!

Prepaid reservations are required and I highly suggest you buy your tickets well in advance and this popular train is often a sell out!. At the time you purchase your tickets, you pick your meal. Seating is Amtrak style-4 people to a table. Since there was 8 of us, it worked out perfectly. We told them who we were with at the time of our reservations, so we were all seated together.

You have the choice of Prime Rib, Roast Pork Loin, Chicken Marsala, Marinated Salmon Steak, or Five Cheese Lasagna. All meals are served with seasonal vegetables, dinner rolls, a beverage, and the chef’s choice of dessert, which for us, was brownie cheesecake. To start your meal, you are served shrimp cocktail and a Caesar salad.

I would show you a picture of my meal, but the movement of the train at the time of the picture made it quite blurry. You can take my word for it, that it was delicious.  Every part of my meal was. You will never leave the Dinner Train hungry! I have to give a huge shout out to our servers for doing such a great job, keeping their footing at all times, and being a lot of fun. Some mentioned a couple times, you would not want to suffer from motion sickness and be on the train eating. Warning, there is a lot of movement! I quite enjoyed it!

The ride is a leisurely 10-14 miles per hour and lasts over 2 hours. It operates rain or shine. We were lucky to have beautiful blue skies during our excursion. The scenery along the way definitely added to this wonderful experience.

The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad has several other types of train experiences that you can enjoy. Kids can enjoy a day with Thomas the Tank Engine. You can ride The Pumpkin Express in October or the Santa Express late November through December. In February you can enjoy a Valentine’s ride. Their regular season begins and May and ends in October.
