Today I ventured out to my second stop on my Local Eats Tour. I took two of my kids with me and we had the absolute pleasure of having lunch at one of the few remaining Mom and Pop sandwich shops remaining in Mason City-Pete’s Kitchen.
Pete’s Kitchen has been owned and operated since 1986 by Peter and Arlene Kiroff. That means Pete and Arlene have been making delicious gyros, subs, pizzas and desserts for almost 30 years.
Pete told me that the desserts are their most popular items. I have long heard about their eclairs, as they have been a long time favorite of my husband’s. What you might not know is that they also make carrot cake, apple crisp, baklava, and cheesecake-cherry or plain. After enjoying some of these, we can understand why!
Not only are their scrumptious desserts homemade, but Pete explained to us that so are the sub/sandwich buns, the pizza sauce and the sausage. You won’t go home hungry after eating one of their sandwiches, which after completely made, weigh in at a pound! You can get a half a one, if a pound is too big for you. You can get your sandwich made either hot or cold.
It came time to order and one of the kids ordered one of their gyros served with homemade tzatziki sauce. It was declared the best gyro she ever had. We also had to take one to go for another one of the kids at home. It was evident as we sat at one of the small round tables inside, that a big part of their business is take out. (You can call ahead and have your order ready for you!) The other one ordered a cheeseburger. He was ribbed a little about it, because who comes in to a place like this and orders a cheeseburger? I understood when he got it, as it was on one of their homemade buns, toasted. I ordered a slice of their sausage pizza. If you think of a slice and think of something small, you must think bigger! We estimate it at probably a 5 x 7 piece of pizza. It was delicious and filling.
I really enjoyed our time at Pete’s Kitchen today. It was almost like stepping into their home and not their business. There was a lot of delicious homemade food served by a friendly and welcoming owner in a comfortable laid back atmosphere.
